It is with great sadness to report that one of Guernsey’s most accomplished marksmen, Mike Martel, has died at the age of 84. He represented Guernsey in the Commonwealth Games in both Canada and Edinburgh and at Bisley he was a Kolapore Cup team member on more occasions than any other member of the competing nations. He also held the Guernsey record of appearances in the Queen’s Prize Final (18) and in 1969 he led the Queen’s Prize at the first stage to win the coveted NRA bronze medal.  He also won the St George’s Cup, Bisley’s most important competition after the Queen’s Prize.

Mike started his shooting with Elizabeth College in the 1950s. He left school to train as a teacher at King Alfred’s College in Winchester and subsequently taught at schools in Hampshire, finally becoming the headmaster of Hawley School in the north of the county.

In addition to representing Guernsey, Mike also shot for, and was president of, the Hampshire Rifle Association and Manydown Rifle Club.  Mike also represented Guernsey on the NRA’s General Council for many years.  He will be missed.
