Alan Le Page
It is with regret that we have to announce the death of Alan Le Page on Monday 11th December, who passed away peacefully at St John's Residential Home, Catel, Guernsey aged 87. He was a Vice-President of the NRA. Alan, like so many Channel Islands children was evacuated from Guernsey in 1940 with his mother, when a German invasion was feared, to spend the war years in Sussex with an aunt. On his return to the island in 1945 he joined Elizabeth College. In the last two years of his time at the school, he shot for the VIII and was Captain in 1947. He worked for the Trustee Savings Bank of Guernsey and the Channel Islands until his retirement in 1988. After being promoted to chief clerk he managed the St Sampson's Branch in 1970 and six years later was promoted to the St Peter Port Branch until his retirement. He was President of the CIB (Guernsey) in 1986. In 1959, Alan returned to shooting and competed at Bisley with the Guernsey team for the first of more than fifty unbroken visits, gaining a place in the second stage of the Queen's that year. In 1975 he placed 10th in the St Georges and 20th in the Grand. He made two appearances in the Queen's Hundred in 1977 and 1984. His final visit to Bisley was in 2010. Together with Dennis Chalker, (who died a month ago) Alan always booked the same hut in B lines. In the last ten years he was a member of Bullet Lodge. He was Guernsey Island Champion for the first time in 1971 and he went on to win the title on two other occasions. ย In 1988 he took part in the Australian Centennial Championships as Vice Captain of the Channel Islands Team and in 1999 and 2007 he toured to South Africa and Canada. Partial loss of vision in the right eye in 2008 did not stop Alan who had offset sights fitted to his rifle, and he continued for a couple more years. Alan was a stalwart member of the Guernsey Rifle Club. He fulfilled the roles of Treasurer, Captain and finally President during his time with the Club. He was a determined shooter and this year he was contemplating another trip to Bisley, but his health would not allow it. He leaves a widow Maureen, daughter Suzanne and granddaughter Victoria.
