Roger Mason

Half Mast
We are sorry to report that Roger Mason passed away peacefully on 9th August at the age of 93.
He was a member of 7 GB touring teams, to Canada in 1966 & 67; Australia and New Zealand, 1968; West Indies, 1970 & 73; Canada & USA, 1971 & 1976.
He was a member of three Palma teams, shooting in the Palma Match in 1967 & 1971 and as Match Adjutant in 1976. At home he shot in the Australia Match in 1968, and for England in the National (1965); and Mackinnon, (1968). He gained membership of the ‘Big 5’ in 1976 as Adjutant for the Kolapore. He appeared in the Queens Final on 6 occasions, the last in 1981 and the top 50 of the Grand Aggregate 3 times the last in 1978. In 1965 he won the Alexandra outright with 50 and the Duke of Gloucester (now the Prince of Wales) with 75 after a tie shoot – HPS scores were rare in those days and 2 in one Imperial was quite an achievement.
Roger was one of those few individuals who invariably saw the best in everyone, remained unfailingly cheerful whatever the situation and charmed everyone who met him; in short a true gentleman.
In retirement, Roger was a regular visitor to South Africa competing in the Annual Prize Meeting at Bloemfontein on many occasions, and each year presented the Scottish Sword to the winner accompanied by a piper. He was a Vice-President of SABU.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends at Bisley and around the world
