Safety on military training areas – “Respect the Range” campaign film

The recent COVID-19 restrictions have made it more likely that people are exploring their local area, including military land, for the first time.

The Ministry of Defence has identified an increase in visitors straying from public footpaths and rights of way on military training areas and ranges.

In response the MoD has launched a short film to urge the public to stay safe when accessing military training areas. The film “ Respect the Range” is available on YouTube here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0DmZtSgjq4

NRA Clubs that access ranges on the MoD training estate are encouraged to watch the film and be aware of the increased risk that members of the public may stray onto the range.

Antiques Legislation – Changes to the Obsolete Cartridge List

Regarding the short note on page 7 of the NRA Summer 2021 Journal the following clarification may assist collectors.

There are seven items coming off the Obsolete Cartridge List and they are all revolvers. They may be sold by the existing owner until the end of the Transition Period as Sect 58(2) and afterwards via an RFD if kept as Sect 7(1) on FAC

The correct list is:-

  • 320 British (also known as .320 Revolver CF, short or long)
  • .41 Colt (short or long)
  • .44 Smith and Wesson Russian
  • .442 Revolver (also known as .44 Webley)
  • 9.4mm Dutch Revolver
  • 10.6mm German Ordnance Revolver
  • 11mm French Ordnance Revolver M1873 (Army)

We are currently in the six month Transition period, ending 21st September, during which these items, previously Antiques held as Sect 58(2), move to Sect 5, prohibited status. However they may be retained if on a Firearm Certificate either as Sect 1 or as Sect 7(1). Most will qualify for Sect 7(1) being pre 1919. They may be sold by the existing owner as 58(2) until 21st September and if retained as Sect 7(1) they may continue to be sold through a Sect 5 RFD. Your application to add them to your existing FAC, or apply for an FAC, must be made prior to the 21st September. We suggest that you do not wait until the last moment. If you have any doubt or question we suggest that you consult us, your Sect 5 RFD, or a specialist organisation such as HBSA.

In addition to removing seven items from the Obsolete Cartridge List the new Statutory Instrument adds 23 (22 rifles and 1 pistol) to the List.

They may now be kept as Sect 58(2) as a curio or ornament and without ammunition. These are as follows:-

  • .26 BSA (.26 Rimless Belted Nitro Express)
  • .33 BSA (.33 Rimless Belted Nitro Express)

  • .40 BSA (.40 Rimless Belted Nitro Express)

Imperial Meeting – COVID Update

It is encouraging to see over 740 entries to the Target Rifle Meeting, which together with the Gallery Rifle, McQueen, Sporting and F Class, means we will be welcoming around 1,500 people to Bisley over the next few days.

The Imperial COVID-secure procedures have been published here https://nra.org.uk/152nd-imperial-meeting-covid-procedures-mr-f-class-tr/, and while most Government restrictions will be lifted from 19th July, we have decided these Imperial COVID-secure procedures will remain in place throughout the Meeting.

Throughout the pandemic Bisley shooters have displayed admirable consideration and respect for the welfare of their colleagues, NRA staff and the wider Bisley community. It is essential that we do not let our guard down now; whilst many of us are double jabbed, and despite the low risk of infection when shooting on our ranges, the virus has not gone away and case numbers are rising rapidly.

Please respect the COVID-secure procedures and instructions applicable in NRA receptions and other facilities, clubhouses, accommodation, gun rooms etc. We all share in the responsibility of ensuring our interactions and social gatherings do not provide opportunities for the spread of the virus.

Some of us may choose to take a lateral flow test every 3-4 days; these are free, highly accurate, and identify the large proportion of people who display no symptoms of the virus. Free test packs are available at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/get-tested-for-coronavirus/

We are excited to be welcoming so many shooters to the 152nd Imperial Meeting; let us all play our part in ensuring it is memorable for all the right reasons.

Andrew Mercer

Secretary General

Yesterday some users of the National Shooting Centre website www.nationalshootingcentre.co.uk experienced some unusual activity.

Our website contractor has identified attempts by some third party to re-direct users to an alternative URL. The problem was with website hosting and has been corrected.

Further investigations are underway and the website is being carefully monitored. The contractor has confirmed to me there has been no breach in data security.
